RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:
People in Southern California are on corner today, fresh for aftershocks from a many absolute trembler in dual decades. It strike final night, a bulk 7.1 upheaval centered nearby Ridgecrest, about a hundred miles north of Los Angeles. That’s a same plcae as Thursday’s 6.4 bulk quake. And there are reports of fires, injuries and energy outages in a area. Eytan Wallace of KGET News is in Ridgecrest. Thank we for fasten us.
EYTAN WALLACE, BYLINE: Hey, Renee. Good morning to you.
MONTAGNE: Tell us what you’re observant there.
WALLACE: So, Renee, I’m indeed during a mobile home park right now, and it’s indeed a same mobile home park that also was impacted by a initial 6.4 trembler a few days ago, usually this time, many some-more of a mobile homes are significantly impacted. They’re damaged.
I’m station in front of one right now that is literally off of a foundation. And a comparison lady who lives here – her son has come to assistance pierce her out. We do not see a building inspector. No building inspectors have indeed come here. But a son and a lady clearly feel that it’s too dangerous to live here during this point. They are relocating out.
MONTAGNE: And we’ve listened reports that thousands of people are now though power. What do we know about that?
WALLACE: Well, we – what we know so far, Renee, is that energy has been rolling in and out here. Now that it’s morning time, it’s a small bit some-more formidable to tell. we can tell we some of a trade lights still sojourn a small bit not operational, and that’s – they’re beeping red. But in this case, we have here that it’s only rolling.
When we initial got here final night, though, let me tell we a stage was scary given half a city was fundamentally in representation black, including gas stations and automobile sales dealers that routinely would have a lot of lights on – all black. So a unequivocally scary scene, for sure.
I do also wish to only tell we a small bit some-more about a damage. And I’m station also subsequent to, like, a wall here that’s done out of, like, petrify post blocks. Many of those post blocks have literally defeated over onto a belligerent roughly like – it looks like a construction site almost, but, no, it was once a station wall – no more.
MONTAGNE: And, we know, we haven’t listened of detriment of life, though I’m wondering what you’ve listened about that arrange of thing – injuries.
WALLACE: You know, Renee, this is something that a people of Ridgecrest, people whom I’ve interviewed here given fundamentally a initial trembler struck – they say, we know, there’s 6.4 earthquake, a 7.1 earthquake. You know, that happens. But they are beholden that a misfortune that they’ve had so distant is only damage. You are right. There are no reports during this time of any casualties or, really, even poignant injuries.
And we should contend that a sanatorium itself, Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, stays closed, though a puncture room is open for anyone who needs to go. They should know that a puncture room is open. At that point, if it’s deemed critical enough, afterwards somebody – some of a patients will be taken to other informal hospitals, maybe in Palmdale about 70 to a hundred miles south of here, and to Lancaster, as well.
But again, you’re right. The good news is they’re observant for such a absolute earthquake, there’s not many reports of injuries and, certainly, no reports of casualties.
MONTAGNE: Well, only briefly, people contingency be extremely shaken because, of course, there’s aftershocks.
WALLACE: Absolutely. And let me only tell you, given we initial got here, Renee, we have felt underneath my feet many, many aftershocks. And a U.S. Geological Survey confirms aftershocks are holding place here. we feel maybe…
WALLACE: …Every few minutes, and there’s been hundreds of aftershocks that are 2.5 bulk or higher. And as we mentioned, people are nervous.
MONTAGNE: Eytan, we’re going to have to leave it during that. I’m sorry. Eytan Wallace of KGET News articulate to us…
WALLACE: Thank you, Renee.
MONTAGNE: …From Ridgecrest. Thank you.
