RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:
The village of Ridgecrest, Calif., is removing a clearer perspective of a repairs caused by final night’s 7.1 bulk earthquake. There are reports of energy outages, fires and some injuries in a area about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Sharon McNary of member hire KPCC is in Ridgecrest and joins us now. Good morning.
SHARON MCNARY, BYLINE: Good morning.
MONTAGNE: And we usually arrived a few hours ago. Tell us what you’re seeing.
MCNARY: You know, I’ve been pushing by town. I’ve been saying lots and lots of chairs in front of houses, even some tents with mattresses inside them that people drug out of a residence to give us a clarity of larger safety. You don’t see a lot of outmost repairs to houses usually from what I’ve seen pushing around. But during a glow station, of course, all a glow engines and vehicles have been pulled out of a glow station. And it was a good thing since there’s still a lot of aftershocks. we was sitting in my automobile during a large one.
And when we initial rolled into Ridgecrest, we stopped during a gas station, and a pumps were roughly all assigned with people stuffing adult their gas tanks, presumably for a prolonged expostulate to another place to stay or usually to keep their vehicles filled adult while they run around doing post-emergency chores, which, we know, there’s going to be a lot of them. But inside a preference store during a gas station, a standard thing we see – bottles everywhere. You could smell a booze usually wafting out a front door. And a trembler indeed knocked a toilet off a bolts. So that was obsolete for customers.
MONTAGNE: Well, we know, people in Ridgecrest and all a surrounding area contingency be on corner since of that 6.4 bulk trembler on a Fourth of July. But how is this stronger upheaval inspiring a people you’ve been articulate to? This is a one-two punch for them.
MCNARY: Well, it’s roughly like a two-one punch since a bigger one followed what they suspicion was a large one.
MONTAGNE: Right, right.
MCNARY: we spoke to one lady named Shawny French (ph). She and her daughter slept outward in their front grass in a tent overnight. They’d mislaid energy for a integrate of hours after a Jul Fourth earthquake. And that was a 6.4. But final night, a 7.1, their energy went off briefly, and afterwards it came behind quickly. It also easy her Internet, that was indeed a usually good news she’s had. we asked her what she needed, and here’s what she said.
SHAWNY FRENCH: we need it to stop. we need it to stop. I’m too aged for this.
MONTAGNE: Whoa. Yeah. Having been in earthquakes, we do wish it to stop after about a garland of post-earthquakes, small tremors. So what there about puncture services? What’s been set adult so far?
MCNARY: Well, in a conditions like a 7.1 earthquake, we’ll see assistance entrance from all over a state, maybe even beyond. There are specialized units, like a civic hunt and rescue team. we went inside a trailer that a Los Angeles Fire Department brought out, and they have collection for pardon people from cars, from buildings. They can cut by steel with an oxygen flame or by petrify with complicated saws. So far, though, nothing of that has been needed. The housing batch here dates from World War II and after, so it’s got flattering good building standards. So it’s – this city’s been reduction exposed to trembler repairs than what we competence find in an comparison city.
MONTAGNE: That’s Sharon McNary of KPCC articulate to us from Ridgecrest, Calif., that is nearby a epicenter of final night’s large quake. Thanks really much.
MCNARY: You bet.
